Indigo Mind Labs offers subliminal titles in three different "formats", which is to say, three different approaches to building them. These formats are known as Ultrasonic, Masked and Hybrid.
At this point, as I write these words in late August of 2026, the technology we at Indigo Mind Labs use to create our subliminals (currently Generation 6.5) is such that almost nobody should ever need to use anything other than the standard and the default, which is Ultrasonic format. So why do we build and offer the other two?
It boils down to making our programs work for as many people as possible. And the way to do that is to have options for those who do not fit the needs or responses of the majority for some reason.
Ultrasonic format
The standard and default is Ultrasonic format because this format is the most widely useful, and the most widely effective, with the most benefits overall from it's approach (that is to say, being effectively silent to most people's conscious hearing).
Ultrasonic takes a recorded set of script statements and then, after various forms of processing to make them more effective, turns them into an ultrasonic audio. That is to say, instead of being at the pitch of normal human speech, which is typically between around 1 to 4 kHz, the pitch of the speech is shifted up to a range of between about 15 to 20+ kHz, where the subconscious can hear and understand it, but the conscious mind typically does not even hear it, and cannot make out what is being said regardless. Even to those who hear it, it sounds like a mosquito, or sometimes high pitched bees.
This format is the standard default because it being so unlikely to be heard at a conscious level makes it very convenient to use while you are doing other things (watching a show, reading, studying, conversing, sleeping, doing mathematical calculations, etc.), without distracting or disturbing you. It also delivers the subliminalized script to the subconscious at a volume that is widely effective and useful. In more than 98% of cases, this format is going to be the most useful and effective.
But there are two cases where it is not. They are:
The first case is extremely rare. I have only seen three cases of it since I started making subliminals ultrasonic around 2002. In each case, the issue turned out to be that the subconscious mind was attempting to resist the subliminal script being executed by causing the person's conscious mind to experience ear pain in response to following the instructions.
The goal of the resistant subconscious in this case is to get you to stop using the subliminal, or at the very least, convince you to turn the volume down to a level where it no longer has to execute the instructions.
In other words, the resistant part(s) of the subconscious is, in this case, attempting to coerce the conscious "you" into using the subliminal in a way that it can easily shut down, override, ignore or prevent from achieving it's goals - or get you to not use it at all.
The second case is more common, but in 6G and later, it is still genuinely rare. This is when you get a form of resistance known as "stonewalling", where the subconscious just shuts down and stops even trying to execute the script. This can be the result of overwhelm, where the subconscious perceives the urgency of the request (volume) or the request or goal itself, as being "simply impossible" - OR it can be a wholesale shutdown of the subconscious as an absolute do-or-die self defense strategy against something it genuinely believes will result in literal death.
(This is virtually never actually the case, but instead, an entirely imagined hypothetical scenario that is feared irrationally, but would be dismissed as preposterous and ridiculous by the conscious mind.)
The former case (technically termed "overwhelm collapse" or "overload collapse") can be solved by reducing the perceived urgency of the request to a level that the subconscious believes it can handle. This is why we have Masked format. The latter case (true resistance based stonewalling) can only be overcome by either applying sufficient effort/urgency to overcome the resistance, or changing how the script is worded. The former is why we have Hybrid format; the latter is why we have generations of technology.
But there is an issue here. How do we know which case is why we got no response? Hints can be gotten in various ways, but the only way to know for sure is to follow the instructions I give for all programs, which is this:
If, for some reason, Ultrasonic does not produce results, switch to Masked format and continue for a period of time. The specific period of time will depend on variables that cannot be detailed reasonably here, so refer to your instructions for that, or ask me (Shannon) on the forum.
Unfortunately, everyone thinks that Masked format is weaker and Hybrid is stronger, so they always try to jump on Hybrid format if Ultrasonic does not work. The problem with that approach is that if the lack of results was coming from overwhelm collapse, then doubling the pressure (Hybrid format) will only make the problem worse. Much worse. And it may take a month or more of not using subliminals for your subconscious to recover, so you can try again.
Masked Format
Masked format is more commonly offered as "subliminal" than Ultrasonic because it is more difficult to create an Ultrasonic format subliminal than it is to create a Masked format subliminal.
To make a masked format subliminal, you have only to "hide" the speech to be subliminalized "under" the so-called "masking track" (often something like a trickling stream or the ocean surf, which are what we use) by reducing the speech track in volume until the conscious mind can no longer understand (or better yet, detect) it, but the subconscious can still hear and understand it.
Knowing the upper and lower bounds of that volume difference window is important, if you want the subliminal to actually be a subliminal. Get the volume of the masked vocals track too low, and even the subconscious will not hear (or be able to comprehend it), thus rendering the masking track all that remains.
Masked format is always the second choice because it handily solves most of the reasons why Ultrasonic format will have trouble:
So if you experienced ear pain on Ultrasonic, and for some of the reasons you would have no result at all, this format will offer a solution, without causing any issues.
(And if you still experience ear pain using this format at the instructed volume, on the instructed device and in the instructed way, then you are experiencing an EXTREMELY rare form of resistance in which the subconscious attempts to dis-incentivize your use of the subliminal by causing pain in response. If that happens, even with Masked format, the best thing to do is allow a few days of use to make sure the pain does not fade out, and if it does not, proceed to using Hybrid format instead.)
This format only has one potential weakness: for those who are truly stonewalling, this format will also produce no results, because the perceived urgency is decreased relative to Ultrasonic format. For the personality types that can respond with true stonewalling, this actually makes Masked format even easier to resist, shut down and prevent from working than Ultrasonic format is.
So, while Masked format solves 2 of the 3 possible reasons why Ultrasonic format may have issues, the third is not phased by it at all. So if you run Ultrasonic for a reasonable amount of time, and get nothing in result, and then try Masked format for a reasonable period of time and still get nothing in result, then - and ONLY then - you know that you need to use Hybrid format.
Hybrid Format
To create a Hybrid format subliminal requires that you combine Ultrasonic and Masked formats for the same subliminal. This seems relatively simple to do with an audio editor like Audacity - just mix the two tracks into one, right? But it's not that simple.
Hybrid format relies on certain variables to be true and if they are not, it can be too much for the subconscious to handle. This can result in overload, confusion, headaches and exhaustion.
If those variables are true, then Hybrid format becomes useful as a last resort approach to dealing with true stonewalling by effectively allowing the subconscious to have the perceptory pressure (urgency of the script to be executed) double, which usually allows the Hybrid format to overwhelm the stonewalling and get the script executed.
For Hybrid to be useful the density of the vocals track must not exceed a certain threshold. If it does, then the subconscious will cease to be able to discern and comprehend what is being said, and the result is that you now have a masking track with noise underneath.
Before that threshold is reached, the conscious mind will hear the vocals track as bees buzzing, but the subconscious will hear and understand the speech. After it is exceed, both will hear what sounds like bees buzzing, and no information is extracted or understood by the subconscious.
Most subliminals producers either never come close to reaching that threshold in terms of information density, or they go so far past it as to be ridiculous.
Hybrid format has two, and only two, uses:
The former is only useful when the other two formats have not worked. The latter is not always possible, depending on how your subconscious mind responds to Hybrid format. In any case, Hybrid format doubling the data input does not change the instructions: you can't assume to use the track for half the amount of time and have it work the same. Likewise, the volume instructed does not change.
Unless this format is specifically called for according to what I have stated here, this format should be avoided because if it is unnecessary, it can actually cause overload collapse or stonewalling where they were not present otherwise. This happens because the perceived urgency to execute the script (perceptory pressure) is simply too high.
Format And Subconscious Level
The format of the subliminal you are using affects which level or levels of the subconscious will hear and respond to it.
Your subconscious awareness is not monolithic; it consists of various different levels (or layers) and those levels or layers each have different parts to them. To some degree, there is direct correlation to the part of the physical brain that is accessed for processing what that part of the subconscious awareness experiences. However, there are layers and parts of the subconscious that do not seem to correlate to the physical brain, even indirectly.
The general rule of thumb that decades of experiments have revealed is that the louder the subliminalized audio is, the "shallower" the level of subconscious awareness that will hear it, and respond. The quieter the volume of the subliminalized audio, the deeper the level of subconscious awareness that will hear it and respond.
Theoretically, the louder subliminalized audio should be heard and responded to by the deeper parts of the subconscious also, but if they do respond, it appears that the shallower levels override their responses.
When I say "shallow" or "deep", I am referring to how close that level of subconscious is to the level of the conscious awareness.
So Ultrasonic format typically interacts with "shallower" subconscious levels of awareness than Masked does, and Hybrid interacts simultaneously with both the shallower and the deeper.
Summary
It is important to use the right format, and use the formats in the right order and way, to achieve the greatest success. You should always default to Ultrasonic and only if that produces issues (ear pain) or no results (overload or stonewalling) should you change formats. If you change formats, always change to Masked first, and only if that also produces no result (or no change), to Hybrid. Hybrid should be used as a last resort, and avoided otherwise.
Ultrasonic whenever possible.
Masked format if there is an issue.
Hybrid format as a last resort.
And just because one title produces a response, do not assume that another title will do the same! Do not automatically assume that you can never use Ultrasonic or that a particular format does not or will never work for you.
Finally, please remember that this applies to Indigo Mind Labs subliminals, but some aspects of this may not apply to subliminals from other subliminal producers.

- It removes the cause of any potential overload collapse by reducing the volume (and thus perceived urgency) of the subliminalized vocals.
